Ricky "Tonka" Tompkins
It's always good catching up with old friends you haven't seen in awhile. Just the other day we ran into our old buddy Ricky. As usual, we exchanged our, "How have you been man?", "What have you been up to?", type of questions. We gave each other the run downs of our lives and talked about what we are doing as of present. All of us knew his passion was photography, but how good he was, or how serious he took it, was a totally different story.

Like a magician with a trick or two up his sleeve, he showed us some photos that he has taken over the past couple of years that just blew us away.

"Crown Royal"

"Colin Giles, Malibu"

"Timmy Curren, Ventura"

These are just a few of many that can be found on his website RickyTompkins. So if anyone in the Socal area, or anywhere for that matter, need some photos taken, I suggest you contact our buddy Ricky!

Is Canada Scarring you into...safety?

A Canadian company called PSA is airing very controversial Commercials of the dangers of work related accidents and how they are easily prevented. Now, you ask...controversial video's of work related accidents? How could that be controversial? And if so, spark any interest?

Well ladies and gentlemen, when you see these video's, just like my intial reaction, being a horror movie fanatic, I was shocked! I immediately yelled "f*%# yeah!!"

To me, this gruesome marketing approach is ingenious. Many companies are afraid to tread these dangerous waters because of the social impact of a commercial of this caliber. The infusion of shock and gore to prove a point, in my opinion, is painfully (literally) affective. You may have noticed but the censorship in the United States is fairly brutal. With your occasional "Family Guy" shock, jaw drop jokes that make you say "They can say that on t.v." - To the controversial Super Bowl commercials that are ridiculous and push the envelope (half of them never making it) - It is certainly proven that controversey sells as well as educates.

Don't believe me? Ask Eminem...still don't believe? Well...Strap on your seat belts and enjoy these videos...I am warning you though..they are pretty ngarly! Makes me want to re-check our worker's comp plan!

The Cloversfield Monster revealed?!?!

Hoey Inc. is counting the days as January 18 draws closer. What's special about that ho-hum Friday in the middle of January? Well, that's the date the shrouded-in-secrecy "Cloverfield" is scheduled to land in theaters.

The trailer for the mysterious monster movie made its debut back in July and sparked huge buzz. Since then, the buzz has quieted a bit, but an ardent group of movie buffs are still scouring the Web for the scoop on the flick.

This week Yahoo witnessed 371% increase in searches on "cloverfield monster revealed" after a new trailer offered a glimpse of the horror to come. Related queries on "cloverfield monster" and "cloverfield trailer" have also smashed through the Search box. Diabolical director J.J. Abrams, the mastermind of all this hype, has jumped 116% in searches over the past week.

The Web-based viral marketing component has been key in keeping the movie's buzz alive. Searches on "cloverfield clues" jumped 112% as sneaky sleuths attempted to unravel a few of the film's mysteries. One question as of late—does the movie's classified colossus have anything to do with the legendary Cthulhu? Searches on the horrific creation of author H.P. Lovecraft soared 64% this week as monstrous theories circulated around the Web.

We can't tell if Cthulhu is involved in the Cloverfield saga, but the latest cinematic clue to make a splash in Search is "slusho." Stir that latest tidbit with past buzzworthy bits such as "cloverfield myspace," "ethan haas," and "1-18-08" and you'll find yourself knee deep in the film's mysterious mythology.

Who is Evil Monito?

Mr. Kim, aka "Evil Monito" is the, in no particular order, Founder / Editor-in-Chief / Creative Director of Evil Monito, Co-Founder of The Social Trust, Creative Director of Riottt.com, Professional Blogger for mrkimsays.com and like me, a fellow insomniac.

I site Mr.Rickey Kim as a strong inspiration to me because of is undeniable presence in the fashion/design industry as well as his personal impact and belief movement, that if you have a minute, will certainly catch your ear as well as your mind and of course your eye. He can also attribute to thousands of sharp design's ranging from sock's and shoes, to a midnight fedora. There is no end to his pursuit of itemized creative brilliance and really no signs of stopping.

As an inspired politician, activist and political adventurist turned designer from San Diego, his sense of unique design theory and composition, exclusive creative collaborations, endless lists of accomplishments has the impressed industry audience clapping favorably at side stage, many people, as myself have taken note...and that I mean literally, with a pen and pad to decipher his genius and apply anything I can absorb.

"Read. Learn. Destroy." A simplistic statement with heavy impact suggests that anything can be accomplished with the proper knowledge and the hunger to learn. To destroy is to outsmart your opponent. Knowledge is certainly power in an industry where there is an endless learning supply and no curve to grade your performance. Art is more complicated than love - to describe a medium, and better yet, to afford a pursuit of art through creative design; one must always be learning and be prepared to cross a line in which you can never look back. The line of abstract thought, power of emotion and interpretation. The essence of creativity through a pronounced medium. All of these pronounced very well by Evil Monito. Hence establishing his growing royalty and fan base in the industry.

I had the chance to meet Mr. Kim and let him know, my exact words were: "You inadvertently started my company." When I sought the chance to shower him with praise and appreciation for his creative poise and penmanship and its direct impact on my life and art, he was kindly responsive and gave me a new found respect for genuine humility.

When you have a chance, sit and read his blog and get a healthy insight of what it means to be a hard working, creative genius. Evil Monito provides many means of online communication to give his surrounding fan base a mecca of insight and inspiration as he embarks on a new mission it seems daily.

Who are these Guys?
"Who are those guys?"

I line I seem to hear a lot. Whether inadvertently associated with Hoey Inc. or another company, group brand or even band. Whether popular or still on the cusp of excellent growth and development; There is always an immediate speculation of who, what and why a company exists and what it is they are trying to accomplish. I was perusing through my e-mails, sometimes scarce, sometimes through a considerable amount asking just that particular question. "Who are we?"

These days, for any company to stay alive in a lucrative business, you must establish a firm identity and a solid relationship with the consumer. Why would anyone wear a shirt label they don't trust? Certainly not to impress their friends. Posed with the question "Who are those guys;" How would you respond to your buddies inquiry? "No idea." Very doubtful. Thus creating the enigma which is a brand.

There is The Hundreds: A sturdy built, well branded, undeniable blogging machine. Being an educated bunch, They push they're LA lifestyle brand like a Heavy Weight boxer pushes a title fight. They live and breathe the industry. They influenced the newest influx of "Streetwear" brands, but lead the pack as one of the more influential Streetwear companies today.

Crooks 'n' Catles is another prime example of Well constructed branding. You can recognize a Crooks 'n' Castles shirt, if you are familiar with their brand, with just a seconds glance. And with their missions statement, you can relate with their "From the Streets" mentality, heavily influenced by the lackluster life of a crook, and the rise to unobtainable success, hence the name "crooks 'n' castles." Always on their hustle.

Or Johnny Cupcakes. The Boston clothing phenomenon. His limited runs, unique novelty items and excellent branding through a yummy treat, the cupcake, He has gone from selling shirts out of a beat up honda accord, to lecturing students and local universities and now pushing revenue into the 7 figure bracket (millions). His brand has been so successful, his stores develop two block long lines and 15 minute sellouts to acquire a Johnny Cupcakes shirt. All stemming from a nickname, a clever marketing scheme and a deep hunger and passion for his trade. We look up to Johnny Cupcakes, his story is inspirational.

These 3 companies alone are pushing multi-million dollar business's through proper branding, fresh designs and a solid identity which never yields off the integrity in which the brand was built. All three of these companies, as most do, start from nothing.

These days it isn't necessarily sink or swim. I've seen companies tread the industry waters and still manage to stay afloat. With the advent of myspace, the proverbial viral community which are blogs, sometimes built with keen insight, other times an opinion pit stuffed with sentence fragments and professional fibbing; Our generation was tailor made to succeed by any of these means with a little motivation, a solid skill set and a courageous passion that won't allow you to stop.

I have personally witnessed success from both sides of the spectrum; As a close associate and friend of a company owner, to a fan watching the rapid climb of an up and coming brand. They all of one thing in common; They're ability to push an idea, a belief, a lifestyle, a brand and to push it with genuine passion.

Just like a majority of companies in the industry, Hoey Inc. had its humble beginning's being initially born in a garage with a lot of passion and little idea of what we were doing, producing the first line of products stemming from an 11 o'clock conversation on a cold 4th of July night in 2004.

It isn't fair to those who don't know us to properly identify who we are and what we are about, although our personal agenda holds deep meaning. As opposed to friends and people in the industry who do know us, they can make a proper assumption; being associated with us for the past couple of years.

Hoey Inc. was initially started as an argyle design based company. To incorporate the pattern and the material into different design concepts and compositions. Whether it be a sweater, or a shirt; inner lining of a jacket, or on a shoe. We believed we could develop a brand that mainly used argyle as template for our line.

However as many trends start and fade out. It was almost immediately apparent to us that a different approach was evident due to the fizzling out of the concept as well as the material in general. It is easy to have a trend killed if you don't capitalize on it immediately. As young kids with an unyielding passion, and a hunger that was undeniable, we had to move forward, but from a fresher stand point that needed more substance. Thus Hoey clothing was born.

Hoey Clothing was the birth of our company. Being from the culture rich city which is San Diego, it is hard to not be influenced by the San Diego lifestyle, sub-culture and way of life. "The Finest City" in the United States was stapled with that name for a reason. Growing up in this city skateboarding, surfing, eating a breakfast burrito at one of the hundreds of chains; it is hard not be inspired by the beautiful waves, friendly people and the rich history of San Diego's inception as a city at every corner of the Gaslmap quarter. We are all a direct product of our environment, irregardless of where we are from; And loving our city, and living in such a culture rich environment, we had a beginning of a movement derived from our personal relationships with our upbringing in this town. Giving us inspiration...just little knowledge of how to take action. We all know where we want to go, but we can NEVER forget where we are from.

Living in horrible conditions with little money, food and support - but a lot of heart, we constantly conspired on how to develop such a brand that emphasizes where we are from, who we are, and what inspires us. At the time, almost completely alienating ourselves, we were forced to live on our own and learn.

Steve's main means of travel for sometime, we named her "Phantom.":

Having many heart to hearts, developing new and old relationships, as best friends we were broken down in every way possible; both emotionally and through our company. In the end, we all came to find a common understanding. Only separated by our eclecticisms, our passion for life as well as passion for our city and as far as a passion for more, it was uncanny how we felt uneasy in this world not pushing for more and settling for less.

After years of developing this common bond and seemingly putting Hoey clothing on the back burner, we had our personal epiphanies and growth, and decided we wanted to be here to stay. It gave us a reason to wake up in the morning...and still does. As we went through fallouts, mistake after mistake; we grew more mature as a company as well as people. Then, Hoey Inc. was born. The reinvention of not only ourselves, but the company in general.

Our first package of promo shirts circa 05.'

Hoey Inc. is no longer a group of individuals, it is a company that stands for a passion, a purpose, for our city, for our friends and family, and for what we believe in. There is no face of Hoey inc, just a common bond and a like minded understanding of our purpose and our presentation.

Our passion for our product, the industry and fashion and it's appeal will always be relentlessness and we are determined to make it contagious as we continue to grow as individuals and as a company. There are is no cleverly developed psychology here. No word play or stories. We stay mysterious to avoid direct acclaim for something we equally produce. We are a family, a bond. We stand behind a brand and share our passion with you. We don't label you as a consumer. Each new purchase adds a family member to our extended family.

We wouldn't be here if it weren't for hard work, hard lessons and constant determination. We encourage you to do the same, work hard and have little complaints; this life is too short to not take advantage of your passions. You will always find a heart behind our company because we genuinely care...we've been there - we persevered. We will never neglect what it took to get us here and never take it for granted. Thank you for supporting us, we look forward to the future with our new found respect for the game.

San Diego's own SK858, Hoey inc. reveals these skateboard ninja's!
In the midst of skate crews, and local skate rats - If you are a skateboarder locally here in San Diego, and you havn't heard of SK858, then you aren't doing your homework.

San Diego's sk858 is a crew of rippers that make up the proverbial modern day "Daggers" (Rent the movie "Thrashin") however, with their humble demeanor and "Less talk more walk" moniquer of poise and presence; It gives you a sense of how the industry and the indivdualism and idealism of displaying a passion for skateboarding with passion and not personality is becoming an internal standard, but not for external revenue.

This crew is made of decent people, with no intention of "stardom" but all intentions of displaying passion through skateboarding wherever they decide to skate and destroy.

I'll let the footage speak for themselves. These dudes rip! Hoey inc. stamp of approval.

And J.P. if you read this, The new look is clean son!

Oh an here's our "Thrashin" reference!

Remember the 80's
From what we see, and from an industry standpoint, the 80's has never gone away. To the "steed" fashion trend, the 80's garb aficionado's, and a culture and demographic born in this generation (Every Hoey Inc. member) we see the throwback to our current fashion sense with a tangent of 80's driven style is a nostalgic standard that gives us flashbacks on a day to day basis. To jordan's, gold ropes and Rayban Wayfarer's - the recycling of this style is beyond trendy, but a re inception of our childhood manifested through our current stytle and mentality. Need a reminder? The Cool Kids are coming to your town!
Here at Hoey Inc. we pride ourselves on good music. Music can motivate, Inspire, move you emotionally; draw you to tears..have you clinching your fist with adrenaline pumping, diving, screaming, stomping your feat to a beat...Music in itself is a powerful format of expression, a culture, a way of life. Hip hop a prime example of music exemplified as a lifestyle, as a sub culture, as a medium to more than just sound and lyrics...but a way of life, a love, a passion, its own living and breathing entity. Its market is endless, the record labels, clothing companies, mc's fueled by the struggles and hardships of the city streets, lyrics driven by pain, by money and success....Thus making it hard to find a daimond in the rough...

Well, we've found that daimond. Ladies and Gents...the COOL KIDS.

The Cool Kids' slow, deliberate vocal flow coupled with simple rhythms harkens back to the glory days of acts like Boogie Down Productions and EPMD. "88" smolders like a N.E.R.D reinterpretation of Run DMC's "Peter Piper," chock full of throwback hip hop style and a smooth recital of a hook from "The Safety Dance." "Flossin'" grinds on 'screwed and chopped' territory until the hilarious opening line, "What up, Autobot?" "Black Mags" just may go down as the smoothest ode to BMX bikes ever recorded over a beat easily duplicated on an Amiga.

The Cool Kid's to me are a flagship of our generations subculture blasted through a cheap basement mic. They embody the passion of hungry kids with nothing to lose, while displaying our industry on their back with their easliy relatable lyrics that intertwine with their undeniably catchy beats...they epitomize our movement and are a direct product of our environment.

Look out for this "Cool Kids" and don't say I didn't tell you. They're simply ears away from being huge. Enjoy them while they are a well kept secret and appreciate them when they've taken center stage...
